Job Summary:

The Medical Physicist provides specialized physics support for radiation oncology services by supporting advanced radiation therapy procedures, treatment planning, equipment acceptance testing, quality assurance, and emergency oncology cases while collaborating closely with physicians, dosimetrists, and clinical staff. The Medical Physicist also supports training, quality improvement initiatives, and coordination of care to ensure safe, accurate, and effective radiation treatment delivery.

Required Qualifications:

• Education:

  • Degree/Education: Possess a Master's Degree in Medical Physics, Physics or other related physical science or Engineering disciplines and has at least two (2) years’ experience working in radiation therapy physics documented by a physicist certified by the American Board of Medical Physics or American Board of Radiology. Degree/Education: Possess a Master's Degree in Medical Physics, Physics or other related physical science or Engineering disciplines and has at least two (2) years’ experience working in radiation therapy physics documented by a physicist certified by the American Board of Medical Physics or American Board of Radiology.

  • Possess subspecialty certification as a Medical Physicist by one or more of the following: The American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics; The American Board of Radiology in either Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics; The Canadian College of Physics in Medicine.

• Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

• Experience:

  • Possess proficient experience as a Medical Physicist of at least 24 months within the preceding 40 months.

  • Possess at least 24 months experience in treating with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) including familiarity with various modulation techniques and systems, patient immobilization and data acquisition, treatment planning, treatment plan and machine QA procedures, dosimetry and film QA validation techniques for IMRT treatment plans.

  • Possess supervisory clinical experience as a Medical Physicist for at least 24 continuous months within the preceding 36 months.

Key Responsibilities:

• Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.

• Shall be knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology and skill sufficient to identify and use necessary equipment and supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members.

• Shall be sufficiently skilled to teach patients proper self-care and to motivate patients and family members to continue the procedures for promoting rapid healing.

• Shall be knowledgeable and possess skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients. The Contract Medical Physicist shall demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the appropriate patient population served: Infants, Children, Adolescent, Adults, and Geriatric (>65).Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for infant to geriatric patients using the nursing process.

• Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for infant to geriatric patients.

• Possess proficient knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions, diagnostic studies and treatments related to prevention, and detection of illnesses in adults, is desirable.

• The contracted Medical Physicist will be knowledgeable in professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform duties

• Possess knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.

• Be a U.S citizen.

Work Environment and Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
