Title: HVAC Operator - 3rd Shift

Salary Range: Grade 11: $23.38/hour

Position Summary

Understands the functions and means of operation of all building and plant heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting, communications, and alarm systems and equipment. Capable of adjusting physical and software components/systems to maintain a comfortable environment in all buildings while minimizing energy use. Makes necessary repairs and perform preventive maintenance in a multi-building complex.

Duties/Responsibilities 

Required Knowledge and Skills

High school diploma/GED.

One year experience in the maintenance or operation of heating, air conditioning, or temperature control systems or related maintenance experience required.

Demonstrated judgment in assessing and responding to emergencies required. Demonstrated good decision-making skills while controlling and operating multi-million-dollar buildings and equipment.

Reliability for working with minimum supervision required.

Must possess valid Driver's License and an acceptable driving record as defined by USI's Vehicle Safety Policy (https://handbook.usi.edu/vehicle-safety-policy).

EPA certification (Level 1 and Level 2 OR Universal) upon hire or must obtain within the first 90 days of employment.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

 

Functional Requirements

Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods of time to perform maintenance tasks and for staff oversight.

Frequent independent physical manipulation of loads of 50 to 80 pounds for extended periods of time. Occasional independent physical manipulation of loads of 80 to 100 pounds.

Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, crouching, climbing or otherwise positioning oneself to access, examine, maintain and repair equipment and machinery in various configurations and at various heights, ranging from ground level to eight feet high. Intermittent use of a ladder to reach heights from eight to twenty feet.

Ongoing manipulation of small objects and precision tools for extended periods of time to perform maintenance tasks.

Continuous independent assessment of equipment and machinery performance to identify defects.

Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications provided by supervisors.

Proficient use of computers and computer systems (software and hardware) to set up functions, enter data, and obtain information.

Effective problem solving and the presentation of a professional demeanor while meeting deadlines under demanding conditions such as multiple priorities.

The ability to work an on-call rotation schedule that includes after hours and weekends, as necessary, to meet department needs.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

Standard hours are third shift Monday through Friday, 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. Some 1st and 2nd shift hours are required.

Overtime hours may be required.

Travel within University complex and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.

This position is considered essential. When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies.
