Job Summary: The Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive primary and specialty medical care within the scope of approved privileges, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, referral, preventive services, patient education, and emergency recognition across a broad range of acute and chronic conditions. The PA will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care for military members and beneficiaries, support medical readiness evaluations (MEB/TDRL), prescribe medications, participate in training and quality improvement initiatives, and uphold all established clinical, ethical, and regulatory standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor of Science degree certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) designation Physician Assistant-Certifies (PA-C)
- License: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant
- Experience: A total of 24 months experience in General Surgery patient care within the last 36 months in order to qualify for the position; or 24 months experience in Orthopedic patient care within the last 36 months.
U.S. Citizenship is required
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).
- Provide care for a variety of diseases and types of injuries (i.e., acute, chronic and minor trauma), and the skills to recognize emergency conditions in order to diagnose, prescribe for and treat diseases, disorders and injuries, and refer the more complex cases and serious conditions to qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.
- Provide educational lectures and participate in in- service training to staff members.
- Promote preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviors and self-care through both formal and individual education and counseling.
- Identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral to a physician.
- Establish collaborative rapport with physician, nursing and others in order to promote and facilitate primary care services.
- Teach patients and family member's healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving wellness.
- Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement.
- Provide occupational medical evaluations of military members with medical problems who are undergoing MEB or TDRL.
- Provide a full range of Physician Assistant (PA) duties to include counseling, review of medical records, treatment and follow-up in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer.
- The PA is to provide and supervise the medical care for orthopedic conditions, treat patients in accordance with protocols, counsel patients directly and indirectly as required, and order appropriate diagnostic tests, as applicable.
- Write a narrative summary detailing the findings, assessment, and recommendation concerning retention/deployment for individual military members undergoing MEB or TDRL.
- Prescribe medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Coordinate patient care through a continuum to facilitate optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality, and cost effectiveness.
- Comply with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures and guidelines used in MTF, and provision of care within ethical and legal boundaries.
Work Environment & Schedule: On site, Monday to Friday, 8 or 10 hourr shifts between the hours of 0600-1800.
Physical requirements: May be required to lift 35–50 pounds independently, with the ability to lift greater weights (up to 75–100+ pounds) with assistance or mechanical lifting devices. May stand for extended periods during clinic hours or surgical procedures and perform repetitive movements such as bending, reaching, and supporting extremities during exams or casting.
